Kersten started with activities in the automotive trade in 1919 as part of the department store in the center of Paramaribo. In 1937 this became an independent activity carried out by the technical department that traded in cars of the automotive brand Chrysler and tractors of the Caterpillar brand.
In 1952 the automotive trade obtained the Volkswagen dealership, moved to the Zwartenhovenbrugstraat in 1959 and was named City Garage N.V.
In addition to the automotive trade, Kersten was the first car leasing company and the first taxi company under the name City Taxi N.V.
The Volkswagen dealership was accommodated in a separate subsidiary in the Van ‘t Hogerhuysstraat, Suroto N.V. in 1968 and in 1977 the Daihatsu dealership was added to this company.
In 1979 the first Mitsubishi cars were imported and on November 16th, 1981 the distribution agreement between City Garage N.V., Chrysler International S.A. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was signed.
